I-5 sucks, but it is a good way to get from here to there. 101 is beautiful, but will take much more time. There area few places on 101 to pull out and park for the night, but they are few and far between – and a bit crowded these days. If you are not concerned about the cold, and have plenty of time, would be a nice way to go. If you are planning on staying in commercial campgrounds along the way, the closer you are to the coast, the higher the rates. I have been to QZ quite a few times, and other than shows, RV parts, and a little bit of offroading/hiking, there isn’t much else going on there to keep my interest for too long. What I really dig between here and there is the Salton Sea / Borrego Springs area. Borrego Springs has a bunch of BLM land, so there is boondocking aplenty. A ton of offroading and hiking to be done, and Borrego Springs is a cool little town to get supplies. IMO, if you are looking to buy rocks or RV parts, Quartzsite is cool. For adventure and chill time, Borrego Springs gets my vote.
